He co-runs Koch Industries, nation's largest privately-held company, with his older brother, Charles. Bill sold his interest in Koch to his brothers in 1983 but later contested that sale in a feud settled in 2001. He is an avid sailor who won the 1992 America's Cup.   • Antipholus of Ephesus and Antipholus of Syracuse - Twin brothers in William Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors whose mistaken identities lay the basis for the farcical comedy. Each twin also has a servant, Dromio, who are also identical twins. The play draws central themes from Plautus (his twin play is called Menaechmi and features one set of twins named Menaechmus of Epidamnus and Menaechmus of Syracuse) and has also been redone in various forms, most notably as the Rodgers and Hart musical The Boys from Syracuse
  • Atlas and his brothers - The mythological tale of the lost city of Atlantis is that it was named for Atlas, the eldest member of five sets of boy twins borne by Cleito, wife to Poseidon, god of the sea. Atlas was the oldest among the five sets of twins and all 10 boys helped rule Atlantis as each twin followed Atlas as the land's king and ruler. The other twins didn't quite get the publicity (or naming rights) that Atlas enjoyed, but ruling a land as magnificent as Atlantis doesn't make too bad of a consolation prize. For the record, the other twins besides Atlas were Eumeleus 8 (Atlas' twin brother), Ampheres and Evaemon 3, Mnesus and Autochthon, Elasippus 2 and Mestor 4, and Azaes and Diaprepes.
  • Castor and Pollux - In Roman mythology, Castor and Pollux are the twin sons of Leda and the brothers of Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra (who are also twins). The constellation Gemini represents the twins with the two brightest stars Castor and Pollux named for them
  • Esau and Jacob - One of two sets of twins in The Bible (Genesis 25) along with Perez and Zerah (Genesis 38). Obviously fraternal twins, Jacob was gentle and Esau a hunter. Their parents were Isaac and Rebekah and their grandfather was Abraham
  • Romulus and Remus - (born 771 BC) - Twin sons of Mars, God of War, and traditional founders of the City of Rome. Rescued as infants from the Tiber River by the God Tiberinus and raised by the she-wolf, Lupa, the twins survived and Romulus later slew Remus in 753 BC over who would rule new city and gain naming rights. According to ancient historians, Romulus won out and served as first King of Rome

  • Berenguer, Ramon II and Ramon Berenguer II - (born in 1053 or 1054) - Twin brothers who jointly ruled as the Count of Barcelona, one of the titles of the Spanish Monarchy. They were the sons of Ramon Berenguer I and upon his death in 1076, they co-ruled Catalonia (some reports say their rule started in 1075) although bickerig led the twins to divide their possessions. Ramon Berenguer II was killed while hunting on Dec. 5, 1082 in an event most felt had been orchestrated by his twin brother. Berenguer Ramon II continued to rule Catalonia until his death in 1097
  • Bessette, Lauren and Lisa - (born Nov. 5, 1964) - Lauren was one of the passengers on the plane that tragically went down in the Atlantic Ocean on July 16, 1999, instantly killing pilot John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife Caroline, and Caroline's older sister, Lauren. Her twin sister, Lisa, was not on the plane

  • Kaczyński, Lech and Jaroslaw- (born June 18, 1949) - Lech was elected President of the Republic of Poland on October 23, 2005 and is the former President of Warsaw. His identical twin brother, Jaroslaw, has served as the Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland since July 14, 2006 when his twin brother appointed him to the position. The twins were child actors in Poland, appearing in the 1962 movie, The Two Who Stole the Moon.

  • Meyer, Cord and Quentin - (born Nov. 10, 1920) - Cord Meyer was a long-time CIA member who was one of that organization's top executives in the 1960's and 1970's. He was incorrectly identified as Deep Throat in the Watergate era. His wife, Mary, was a mistress of President John F. Kennedy, shortly after she divorced Cord Meyer. She possibly did drugs with the President and was murdered under very mysterious circumstances in 1964. The murder was never solved but on his deathbed, Cord Meyer insinuated that the same people who assassinated JFK also killed his ex-wife. Quentin Meyer was killed at Okinawa in World War II, and Cord Meyer was blinded in his left eye while fighting in the same war in Guam.

  • Avi - Well-known author of mostly children's and young adult books who won the Newbery Award for the best children's book of 2002 (Crispin: The Cross of Gold). Avi is not his real name - it's a nickname given to him as a child by his twin sister. They were born in Brooklyn in 1937
  • Bowles, Heloise - (born April 2, 1905) - Original Hints from Heloise syndicated columnist was a twin - her daughter took over the column upon Heloise's death in 1977
  • Brizzi, Paul and Gaetan - (born Dec. 24, 1954) - French animators who helped create the movie Fantasia 2000
  • Cannings, Richard and Syd - (born 1954) - Canadian writers/naturalists who have helped preserve Western Canada's beauty through numerous books and institutes. Richard Cannings has written a number of books on birds, while his identical twin brother Syd has served as the director of nature preserves in the Yukon
  • Dick, Phillip K. - (born Dec. 16, 1928) - Science-fiction writer who had many of his novels and short stories converted into films, including A Scanner Darkly and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sleep? (basis for film Blade Runner). Dick's twin sister, Jane, passed away five weeks after their premature birth and her death haunted the writer his entire life and the theme of phantom twins recurs often in his works. Dick died on March 2, 1982
  • Friedman, Esther and Pauline - (born July 4, 1918) - Better known as advice columnists Dear Abby and Ann Landers (Landers passed away on June 22, 2002). The twins had a lengthy estrangement from each other that was profiled in a made-for-TV movie
  • Gentling, Scott and Stuart - (born Dec. 31, 1941) - Artists who live in Fort Worth - best known for bird paintings
  • Hanuka, Tomer and Assaf - (born Jan. 16, 1974) - Twin illustrators originally from Israel (Tomer is now based in NYC and Assaf in Tel Aviv), who work both individually on projects as well as collaborate together (Bipolar comic book series)
  • Hersh, Seymour and Alan - (born Apr. 8, 1937) - Seymour Hersh is a well-known investigative journalist (New Yorker). There is also a set of older twin sisters in the Hersh family
  • Hildebrandt, Tim and Greg - (born Jan. 23, 1939) - Well-known fantasy artists profiled on Twinstuff in 2001
  • Kubler-Ross, Elisabeth - (born July 8, 1926) - World-reknown author (On Death and Dying) who published over 20 landmark books on similar subjects. She graduated from medical school in Zurich in 1957 and passed away in Arizona on August 24, 2004. She is one of a set of triplets
  • Magafan, Ethel and Jenne - (born Aug. 10, 1916) - Artists who were most well known for Depression-era murals. Ethel died in 1993. Jenne died in 1952
  • McWhirter, Ross and Norris - (born Aug. 12, 1925) - Co-founders of Guiness Book of World Records - Ross was assassinated in 1975. Norris passed away in April, 2004
  • Shaffer, Anthony and Peter - (born May 25, 1926) - Authors and playwrights. Peter wrote Amadeus and Equus (a play about twins) while Anthony wrote Sleuth and died in 2001
  • Smith, Marvin and Morgan - (born Feb. 16, 1910) - Famous twin photographers based in Harlem who captured many of that area's most striking photos in the 1930's-1950's. Morgan died in 1993 and Marvin in 2003. The two married twin sisters in a double ceremony and each divorced their wife on the same day three years later
  • Soyer, Raphael and Moses - (born Dec. 25, 1899) - Identical twin painters who emigrated with their family from Russia in 1812. The Soyer twins and their younger brother Isaac settled in New York City and often made that city's inhabitants the focus of their paintings. They were born in 1899 and died in 1987 (Raphael) and 1974 (Moses), respectively
  • Sykes, Plum and Lucy - British socialites/authors. Plum had a best-selling book (Bergdorf Blondes) in 2004 and works at Vogue Magazine. Lucy is a fashion editor at Marie Claire, and had a baby boy (Heathcliff) in the summer of 2003
  • Taylor, Barbara (McCafferty) and Beverly (Herald) - (born Sept. 15, 1946) - Twin authors of Tatum Twins Mystery Series of books (five in series as of 2007) which feature identical twin sisters Nan and Bert solving mysteries in Louisville, Kentucky.
  • Thorne, Julia and David - (born Sept. 16, 1944) - Julia Thorne is a best-selling author (You Are Not Alone) who has written important books on depression and divorce. She was the first wife of Mass. Senator John Kerry with whom they had two daughters. Kerry was a Yale classmate of David. Julia passed away from cancer on April 27, 2006
  • Vaughan, Henry and Thomas - (born April 17, 1622) - Henry was a Welsh poet and a doctor who achieved fame long after his death in 1695. One of his best-known works is Silex Scintillans. Thomas was a philosopher, clergyman and alchemist who preceded his brother in death in 1666
  • Vowell, Sarah and Amy - (born Dec. 27, 1969) - Sarah Vowell is a popular journalist and commentator for public radio whose best claim for fame may be her voice-over as Violet in the movie The Incredibles. Her fraternal twin sister Amy once gave her an eyelash of abolitionist John Brown for Christmas while she gave her sister a DVD player
  • Wilder, Thornton and Theophilus - (born April 17, 1897) - One of the United States' top writers of the 20th century, Thornton Wilder's twin brother died at birth. Wilder featured twins in his second novel, The Bridge of San Luis Rey, and is probably best known for his play, Our Town. His last novel, Theophilus North, is part autobiography and partly a fictional portrait of the twin brother he never knew. He died in 1975, two years after the book was published
